Yet another Memorable Night

Well last night was interesting....it rained for almost 30 minutes. It was a fairly heavy down poor. We happened to be at a coworkers house for a little get together. Here's how it all went down....

We strolled on over to their house about 520, it was a short 5 minute walk. We arrive and the next 1.5 hours was spent with Laurel and I taking turns telling Jack he couldn't play with things. They have a rather stocked bar and as it happens Jack loves to play with Scotch sleeves. Their house actually feels homey and it was refreshing for us to visit. However, they had lots of potted plants, one of which was a delicate cactus with fine little needles.

While in the backyard trying to keep Jack from jumping in the pool (seriously he loves the pool) and out of this quaint little fountain he managed to find this little cactus and rub the backside of his forearm against it. No one realized why Jack kept wincing and grabbing at his right arm. Upon closer inspection it appeared there was a little rash. I gently rubbed it to see if it was raised. He then became hysterical. The next 20 minutes (while Laurel back tracked our walk in hopes of finding Hudd's binky that was gently tucked under his shoulder) was spent trying various methods of removal for these tiny needles. Meanwhile Jack's screaming...I'm thinking these things are really hurting him from his reaction and death grip on my neck. We finally managed to rub some aloesk ointment on his arm to sooth the area and decide best to let them come out on their own. At this point La returns and Jack apparently is no longer bothered by the pricklies in his arm. We finally got to eat some good ribs and visit with folks after Jack explored every inch of the house and then the rain started. Truthfully it was pleasant to hear and smell the rain...I was already wanting a break from the dust. We decided to wait until the rain ceased in order to make our trek home. With two tired little ones we came home to a foyer and a kitchen full of water.

The foyer was a pretty easy cleanup...but the kitchen was a disaster. From what I could tell the water came in from two spots, under our back door and from a vent in the ceiling. We slightly freaked out when we realized water had managed to get inside the cabinet where we had both our video camera and nikon stored. Both items were dripping wet. La worked her magic and disassembled everything and got it dry. Thankfully, everything is now in working order. We had water in 1 of our 5 upper cabinets (where cameras were stored), half the bottom cabinets, and it managed to find its way inside our microwave (which I've been told I'm not allowed to use) and in our oven. Thank goodness we had a floor squeegee that cut down the clean-up time and prevented us from using 1 of the 4 towels we currently have.

As I'm writing this workers are in and out of our villa attempting to "fix" the problem. Apparently, there were quite a few villas that took on water. Keep in mind this was a little rain...no way was it more than 1in. of water. Funny how we take for granted little things like building codes in the states. It's also funny how much standing water I saw on my way to work this morning. Eventually they'll figure out how to solve this little water log issue. One things for sure as soon as they do it won't take long there is an insane amount of labourers here.

Side note: On my way back from the office I saw a huge pile of rocks being hand loaded on a semi. There were 10 Indians each taking 1 or two rocks at a time...I thought to myself why not use a wheel barrel, it'd be much faster...but no they literally rely on manpower. After seeing the masses of labourers I can now comprehend how the pyramids were built.
