So yesterday I went to register our vehicle. We got it registered only to find out there were a number of fines on the car. About 260 rials worth of fines...which comes to be $676. Luckily we agreed before hand that the tickets were to be paid by them. Salim then proceeded to tell me that the car had incurred 3 separate speed tickets. They have cameras on various parts of the highways here to nab speedsters. Well apparently I'm a speedster because all 3 tickets were when I was driving. We've had this thing like 2 weeks. I know I have many more tickets on my company vehicle. When I'm driving I simply keep up with traffic, but no longer will I drive by that rule. Thank goodness I found out that those things are in proper working condition now as to a year from now.
2 Things that I think are really good ideas that they do here. 1. The speeding cameras on the roads. 2. They insure vehicles, so the insurance came with the vehicle that I bought and we're insured up until March this year. And in order to register your vehicle each year you have to pay off any and all fines before they'll allow you to reregister.
I cracked up today when I saw an Omani dressed in a dishdash riding a dingy motorcycle. He did have a helmet on. But he was wearing sandals with dress socks that came up to his low-mid calf. I know his socks only managed to reach that high because his knee and down was exposed as he straddled the bike while wearing his dish dash. If he ever had to lay the bike down, he'll have one heck of a strawberry.
